Cuxhaven - a still young city in Niedersachsen

You can find Cuxhaven in the delta of Elbe and Weser. With 39 km mainland, 26 km water border and a total area of 16.191 hectars, it´s the northernmost city of Niedersachsen. In the cure parts Döse, Duhnen and Sahlenburg you find kilometers of beach. By low water you can walk in the mud for hours, watch ships in the distance on the Elbe, or get cooled in the water. Also the sunset is a wonderful sight in the Sahlenburger mud, even if the cloud- formations in the mud are reflected. Whose feet are healthy can enjoy a 10 km mud-walking to the island Neuwerk. If you take heard looks, you can discover a lot of things in the mud, for example priele, sea-stars, mudworms, Quallen, Crabs and some kinds of shells. For the return trip from Neuwerk you can use either the ship or the well known mud-cars. In Sahlenburg the Werner forest and the finch moorland are directly on the border to the North Sea. A large popularity annually enjoys the "Duhner mud race" in July. It is the only horse race world-wide , which is fought out on the bottom of the sea. In Altenbruch during the kite celebration you can look over the shoulders from professionals working with their kites who came from far away and each year in the Grimmershörnbucht the so-called "summer evening at the sea" takes place connected with magnificent high fireworks. In 1962, during the night February 16th to 17th, a heavy storm tide caused large damages to the dykes. Although the water stepped over the dyke top and broad planar into the center of the city, particularly along the dyke street, the dykes stood the pressure. The desire to build a deep-water port for the large container ships of the newest generation near the Baumrönne unfortunately did not fulfill itself so far.
